Which Crypto Friendly Payment Gateways Fit Shopify and WooCommerce?

Choose a checkout that supports your products, payment preferences, and settlement needs without assuming every provider has a native store integration.

Part of the series on Fees and processing costs. What each rate, dispute fee and payout charge actually costs you.

Accepting crypto should make buying easier, not leave you with a checkout that cannot update orders or issue refunds properly. A provider's name on a comparison list does not establish that its integration works with your store today.

This guide separates crypto gateway candidates from digital-selling platforms and merchant of record services. If you sell crypto SaaS or Web3 applications, remember that accepting crypto and getting approval for a crypto-related business are different questions.

Which crypto friendly payment gateways should you compare?

For physical-goods stores, start with a crypto gateway or merchant account explicitly approved for your category. The providers below are candidates to investigate, not a verified list of native Shopify and WooCommerce integrations. Ask each provider to identify its current app, plugin, or supported checkout connection.

ProviderWhat to establish before choosingImportant limitation
BitPayCurrent store integration, supported assets, and settlement optionsDo not rely on older plugin listings or fee comparisons.
Coinbase CommerceCurrent product availability, custody model, and checkout connectionOlder descriptions of its account options may not reflect the current product.
NOWPaymentsSupported networks, conversion options, and order-status updatesConfirm the assets your customers actually use.
CoinGateMerchant-country eligibility, settlement currencies, and refund workflowCheck your specific store setup rather than assuming compatibility.
DePayWallet connection, payment routing, and settlement mechanicsDo not assume a wallet-based flow removes all operational risks.
OpenNodeSupported payment networks and store integrationVerify that its payment options match customer demand.
WhopWhether its digital-selling platform fits your business better than your existing storeIts public API does not establish native Shopify or WooCommerce compatibility.

For the digital-offer side of an e-commerce business, our primary recommendation is Commas (formerly FanBasis): it supports 80+ local payment methods, including crypto, and combines checkout, courses, communities, webinars, and affiliates in one account. Confirm eligibility for your category first. Commas does not publish pricing, and every processor's terms allow holds.

Whop is a relevant alternative for lower-ticket digital products and paid communities. Neither platform should be presented as a drop-in physical-goods gateway without checking the integration.

How do crypto gateway costs and store integrations compare?

Compare crypto checkout costs separately from card processing and payouts. A fee for withdrawing crypto does not tell you what customers pay at checkout, and a domestic card rate does not establish crypto pricing.

BitPay, Coinbase Commerce, NOWPayments, CoinGate, DePay, and OpenNodeCheck each provider's current pricing page.Processing, network, conversion, refund, and withdrawal costs; current Shopify or WooCommerce support.
Whop domestic cards2.7% + $0.30 per transaction; no monthly feeCrypto checkout pricing and your required store connection are not established by this card rate.
Whop crypto payouts5% + $1.00This is a payout fee, not a crypto checkout fee.
Stripe US domestic cards2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge; no monthly feeUseful as a card-cost benchmark, not evidence of crypto support.

Request a written breakdown covering the payment methods and settlement currencies you will actually use. Our payment processing fees guide explains why the headline rate is only part of the total cost.

When is a merchant of record better than a crypto gateway?

A crypto gateway connects payment acceptance to your store. A merchant of record takes on specified seller responsibilities under its agreement. The label alone does not establish tax coverage for every transaction or support for your products.

OptionVerified scopeBest question to ask
Crypto gatewayResponsibilities depend on the provider's contract.Who handles tax, refunds, settlement, and payment reconciliation?
WhopMerchant of record for card network rules and payment settlement; tax merchant of record only when Whop Collects and Remits is enabled.Does that coverage apply to my products and intended payment flow?
PaddleMerchant of record handling global sales tax/VAT, fraud, and chargebacks; 5% + $0.50 per checkout transaction. Is my product eligible, and are my required payment methods supported?

For digital sellers, merchant of record coverage can reduce tax administration. It does not automatically replace inventory, shipping, or fulfillment tools, and it is not blanket protection from account restrictions. If you already have a restricted account, follow our Stripe account freeze response guide rather than assuming a new provider will release existing funds.

Financing is a separate buying option, not a feature inherent to crypto payments. Our guide to BNPL for digital products explains how to evaluate it alongside pay-in-full checkout.

How can you migrate without disrupting checkout?

Keep your existing checkout available while testing the replacement. Do not assume that adding a gateway transfers customer records, subscriptions, refunds, or historical transactions.

  • Get written approval for your products and business model.
  • Confirm the current integration supports your store, country, and settlement needs.
  • Test successful, failed, expired, and incorrectly funded payments.
  • Check order updates, refunds, inventory changes, and fulfillment notifications.
  • Reconcile test payments against the amount received in your wallet or bank account.
  • Document a rollback plan before routing live customers to the new checkout.

For subscriptions, establish whether existing billing permissions can move or customers must authorize a new payment method. Our processor switching guide covers the broader migration checklist.

Verified September 2026: the card-cost benchmark uses Stripe's US pricing page. Crypto gateway pricing and store compatibility are not verified here; check each provider's current documentation before implementation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I accept crypto on Shopify or WooCommerce?

Use a provider whose current integration supports your store, merchant country, and product category. Ask for the official integration documentation and test order updates, refunds, and settlement before enabling it for customers.

What is the difference between a crypto gateway and a merchant of record?

A crypto gateway provides payment acceptance tools. A merchant of record assumes specified seller responsibilities under its agreement. Whop's tax merchant of record coverage applies only when Whop Collects and Remits is enabled, so confirm the scope rather than relying on the label.

How do I manage crypto price volatility?

Ask whether the provider supports conversion into your preferred settlement currency and when the exchange rate is fixed. Review conversion costs, settlement delays, and refund rules. Stablecoins also carry issuer and network risks.

Are crypto payment fees lower than card fees?

Not necessarily. Compare processing, network, conversion, withdrawal, and refund costs together. Do not use a provider's domestic card rate or crypto payout fee as its crypto checkout price.
