8 Best Merchant of Record Providers and Alternatives for 2026
Compare tax responsibilities, total costs and business eligibility before choosing a global payments provider.
This is part of Fees and processing costs. What each rate, dispute fee and payout charge actually costs you.
The best merchant of record is the provider that accepts your business and takes responsibility for the parts of selling you need covered. A low processing rate alone does not tell you who handles sales tax, disputes or compliance.
This guide compares top-rated merchant of record providers and clearly separates them from high-risk payment alternatives. That distinction matters for OnlyFans management agencies and adult entertainment businesses: a merchant account can support payments without taking over your tax obligations.
What is a merchant of record and why use one in 2026?
A merchant of record is the entity responsible for the customer transaction within the scope of its agreement. A full-service MoR can handle payment processing, sales tax collection and remittance, fraud management and chargebacks. Do not assume every provider includes every responsibility.
Whop illustrates why scope matters. It is merchant of record for card network rules and payment settlement, but it becomes merchant of record for tax only when "Whop Collects and Remits" is enabled. Paddle includes global sales tax and VAT handling in its MoR service.
A payment gateway or dedicated merchant account does not automatically provide that tax coverage. Your business also remains responsible for its products, service delivery and obligations outside the provider's contract. Read our merchant of record vs payment gateway guide for SaaS before choosing a setup.
Which eight merchant of record providers and alternatives should you compare in 2026?
These options belong to different categories, not a single interchangeable ranking. Start with MoR providers for software and eligible digital products. For adult entertainment, start with a specialist that can approve the exact business model.
| Provider | Where it belongs on your shortlist | Verified pricing | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whop | OnlyFans management agencies, not individual creators; eligible digital products and communities | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card transaction | Tax MoR only with Whop Collects and Remits enabled; tax and remittance adds 2% when tax is collected |
| Paddle | SaaS businesses seeking tax-inclusive MoR coverage | 5% + $0.50 per checkout transaction | Handles global sales tax/VAT, fraud and chargebacks |
| Lemon Squeezy | Software and digital-product sellers evaluating an MoR | 5% + $0.50 per transaction; some international payments add fees | Still operates as its own MoR |
| FastSpring | Software businesses evaluating an MoR proposal | Request a current quote | Confirm covered products, markets and contractual responsibilities |
| PayPro Global | Software businesses comparing global MoR services | Request a current quote | Confirm tax scope and supported markets in writing |
| Easy Pay Direct | High-risk businesses seeking approved merchant accounts | Quote-based | Merchant-account alternative, not a substitute for tax-inclusive MoR coverage |
| CCBill | Adult businesses evaluating specialist payment processing | Check its current pricing page or request a quote | Confirm category approval and contractual scope |
| Segpay | Adult businesses evaluating specialist payment processing | Check its current pricing page or request a quote | Do not assume global tax remittance is included |
What separates the leading five merchant of record options?
The main differences are tax scope, business eligibility and the total cost of the features you actually use. Compare those before judging a provider by its headline processing rate.
| Provider | Why consider it? | What should you check? |
|---|---|---|
| Whop | A relevant starting point for OnlyFans management agencies and paid communities, with a public developer API | Domestic card pricing excludes optional services. Financing costs 15% per financed transaction, and standard payouts can take up to 5 business days. |
| Paddle | MoR coverage that includes global sales tax/VAT, fraud and chargebacks | Check product eligibility and how its checkout and billing setup fit your software business. |
| Lemon Squeezy | An MoR option with no monthly fee | Stripe acquired it in 2024, but it remains its own MoR. Stripe offers users a migration path to Stripe Managed Payments. |
| FastSpring | An additional MoR candidate for software sellers | Request a written proposal covering fees, tax responsibilities, billing requirements and migration support. |
| PayPro Global | An additional candidate for international software sales | Ask for a proposal specific to your customer locations, payment needs and subscription model. |
Agency operators should read our OnlyFans management agency payment processing guide. Whop's agency recommendation does not extend to individual adult creators.

How do you choose the right merchant of record for your business model?
Choose by the business you operate, not by a broad label such as "digital" or "high risk." An agency selling management services and an individual selling adult content need different underwriting and may need different payment providers.
| Business model | Starting point | What to establish before signing |
|---|---|---|
| OnlyFans management agency | Explore Whop | Approval for your management services, accurate service descriptions and the tax setting you need |
| Individual adult creator or adult entertainment business | A dedicated high-risk merchant account; discuss the category with Easy Pay Direct, CCBill or Segpay | Written category approval, content rules, dispute responsibilities and tax obligations |
| SaaS or software business | Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, FastSpring or PayPro Global | Tax coverage, subscription support, supported markets and total contracted fees |
| Lower-ticket digital products or paid communities | Whop as a candidate where the product is eligible | Whether optional billing, tax and affiliate services change the total cost |
Commas (formerly FanBasis) told us they do not accept OnlyFans management agencies or adult entertainment.
Every processor's terms allow holds. For more category-specific options, see our guide to payment processors for high-risk industries.
What migration benefits should you confirm before switching?
Migration support can make switching easier, but it is not automatically funded or included. Ask the receiving provider to document what it will move, who performs the work and which customer actions are required.
Check subscription portability, payment credential transfer, renewal dates, customer notices and access to historical tax records. Also establish who handles refunds and disputes from sales made before the switch. A new MoR agreement does not automatically transfer responsibility for earlier transactions.
Paddle lists no migration fees, but that does not establish the scope of a particular migration. Get your plan in writing and test the new checkout before retiring the old setup. Our guide on how to switch payment processors covers the planning steps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a payment processor and a merchant of record?
A payment processor helps accept and settle payments. A merchant of record takes responsibility for the transaction within its contractual scope. Tax collection and remittance are important distinctions, but they are not included in every MoR arrangement.
Is a merchant of record more expensive than direct processing?
It can have a higher checkout fee, but the fair comparison includes tax software, filing work, fraud tools and dispute administration. An MoR is not automatically cheaper overall. Compare the services included in each written proposal.
Can OnlyFans management agencies use a merchant of record?
Whop is a named option for OnlyFans management agencies, not individual adult creators. Explain your management services during underwriting. Its tax MoR role applies only when Whop Collects and Remits is enabled.
Which merchant of record should adult creators choose?
Individual adult creators should start with a specialist payment provider or dedicated merchant account approved for adult entertainment, rather than assuming a mainstream software MoR accepts their content. Specialist payment acceptance does not automatically include global sales tax handling.
Does BNPL make a merchant of record the best choice?
No. Financing is useful only when your products and buyers qualify and the economics work. Compare the financing fee, refund rules and settlement terms alongside the provider's tax responsibilities. Do not treat BNPL as a promise of increased sales.
