What Is a MATCH List for Merchants? The TMF Explained

Understand merchant termination records, the limits of switching processors, and the steps to take if your business is listed.

Part of our guide to Fees and processing costs. What each rate, dispute fee and payout charge actually costs you.

A terminated payment account does not automatically mean your business is on the MATCH list. The important questions are whether your acquiring bank reported you, what reason it recorded, and whether that information is accurate.

MATCH can make getting another merchant account much harder, but calling it a permanent blacklist or a business death sentence is misleading. This guide explains the reporting process, what to ask your acquirer, and how to approach a new provider without making the problem worse.

What Exactly Is the MATCH List and Who Controls It?

MATCH is a merchant screening database operated by Mastercard. Acquirers use it when assessing merchant applications. It records merchants and related information reported under Mastercard's termination criteria.

The term Terminated Merchant File, or TMF, is often used alongside MATCH. A listing is a risk signal for an underwriter, not a public credit report or an automatic ban on every form of payment acceptance.

A processor closing your account does not, by itself, prove you were listed. Ask your processor or acquiring bank to confirm whether it submitted a MATCH record and explain the recorded reason. Do not assume that a rejected application proves a listing either.

What Triggers a Merchant to Be Put on the MATCH List?

An acquirer reports a merchant when the circumstances meet applicable Mastercard reporting criteria. Relevant reasons can include excessive chargebacks, excessive fraud, account data compromise, transaction laundering, illegal transactions, and certain security or card-network rule violations.

  • Chargebacks and fraud: These have specific reporting criteria. A dispute spike alone does not establish that a MATCH listing is required.
  • Transaction laundering: Submitting another business's transactions through your merchant account can create serious compliance problems.
  • Security and illegal activity: Compromised payment data or prohibited transactions can lead to reporting under the applicable rules.

Do not confuse a processor's own risk limits with Mastercard's MATCH criteria. Learn how chargeback ratios affect your merchant account, and ask your acquirer which rules apply to your business.

An outdated address or a change in sales volume may prompt an account review, but neither automatically proves fraud or transaction laundering.

How Can You Process Payments if You Are Already on the MATCH List?

Get the reporting details before applying elsewhere. Ask the reporting acquirer for the reason, the information it submitted, and its correction process. If the record is wrong, provide documents supporting a correction. Resolving the underlying issue does not automatically make an accurate listing removable.

Next, approach a high-risk merchant account provider that can assess the recorded reason and your business category. Easy Pay Direct offers high-risk merchant accounts, but that does not establish that it will accept your particular MATCH listing or adult business.

RouteWhen it may fitWhat to establish first
Dedicated high-risk merchant accountA business needing underwriting for its category and termination historyWhether the acquiring bank permits your category and can consider the recorded MATCH reason; pricing is quote-based
Easy Pay DirectA merchant seeking high-risk account placement and multiple-account routingWhether an acquiring partner can approve the actual business and listing; pricing is quote-based
WhopOnlyFans management agencies, not individual adult creatorsWhether Whop accepts the agency's services and disclosed history; merchant-of-record status does not bypass screening

For an OnlyFans management agency, explore Whop with your business model and termination history disclosed. Whop acts as merchant of record for card-network rules and payment settlement, but that does not erase your record or promise acceptance.

Commas (formerly FanBasis) told us they do not accept OnlyFans management agencies or adult entertainment. Every processor's terms allow holds.

For other business models, our Stripe alternatives guide can help you identify candidates, but switching platforms does not remove a MATCH entry. Never apply under someone else's identity or hide the business receiving the payments.

How Can You Prevent Your Business From Getting Blacklisted?

Keep your processing activity aligned with what your acquirer approved. Disclose your products, websites, billing model, and who delivers the service. Get approval before adding a materially different category or processing payments for another business.

Monitor disputes and fraud, use clear billing descriptions, make cancellation easy, and keep delivery records. Dispute alerts can help you respond earlier, but they do not prevent every chargeback or replace good customer support.

Category fit matters. Businesses selling tech support and IT services should seek approval for those services rather than rely on a generic account. The same principle applies to adult businesses and agencies.

Maintain a cash buffer and an approved continuity plan. Multiple processors do not shield you from MATCH reporting, and instant-payout options for digital downloads do not override underwriting or holds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you ever get off the MATCH list?

MATCH records are subject to Mastercard's retention and removal rules; they are not necessarily permanent. Contact the acquirer that reported you to challenge inaccurate information or ask whether a permitted removal condition applies. Fixing the underlying business problem does not automatically qualify an accurate record for early removal.

Does Stripe check the MATCH list?

Do not assume a Stripe application avoids MATCH screening. MATCH is used in acquiring-bank underwriting, and opening a platform account does not establish final approval. Ask Stripe how a prior termination or MATCH listing affects your eligibility before routing sales through it.

Can I still process payments if I am on the MATCH list?

Possibly. Acceptance depends on the recorded reason, applicable network rules, your business category, and the acquiring bank's underwriting decision. A high-risk specialist can assess potential placement, but neither a new processor nor a merchant-of-record platform automatically bypasses the listing.

Why would a merchant be added to the MATCH list?

Reporting reasons can include excessive chargebacks or fraud, transaction laundering, account data compromise, illegal transactions, and certain rule violations. Ask the reporting acquirer for the actual reason rather than assuming every termination or dispute spike results in a MATCH entry.
