Which Payment Processing Fees Does Your Headline Rate Leave Out?
Calculate what you actually pay, separate fees from reserves, and compare providers using your own sales mix.
Part of the series on Fees and processing costs. What each rate, dispute fee and payout charge actually costs you.
Your headline processing rate is a starting point, not your total cost. International cards, disputes, currency conversion and optional services can all change what you pay.
Many so-called hidden payment processing fees are published elsewhere in a processor’s pricing documentation. The problem is comparing a headline rate with a bill that includes much more.
Start with your statement rather than an assumed industry average. Your actual cost depends on your transaction sizes, customers, payout choices and enabled features. Also keep reserves separate: money withheld is a cash-flow restriction, not automatically a processing fee.
How do you calculate your real payment processing cost?
Effective fee rate = total processing-related fees divided by gross processed sales for the same period, expressed as a percentage. Use a representative period and keep the calculation consistent across providers. Do not divide by net bank deposits, which may already reflect fees, refunds and withheld funds.
| Statement item | Include in the fee total? | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction fees and fixed per-sale charges | Yes | Include both components of the advertised rate. |
| International, conversion and financing fees | Yes | Use actual charges for your payment mix. |
| Dispute fees | Yes | Subtract any fee refunds received. |
| Payout, platform and optional service fees | Yes, for an all-in comparison | Include the same scope of services for each provider. |
| Reserve balances and temporary holds | No | Track separately as unavailable working capital. |
| Refunded sales and chargeback principal | No | Track as sales reversals or losses, not processor fees. |
Fixed per-transaction charges matter more on smaller purchases. International sales, financing usage and payout frequency can also change the result. That is why there is no single reliable “real rate” for every digital business using the same processor.
Keep a separate cash-flow view showing available funds, reserves and expected deposits. A provider can have competitive fees while still being a poor fit for your working-capital needs.
How can you stop overpaying for payment processing?
Send prospective providers your processing statements and ask them to price the same sales mix. Request a written breakdown covering card fees, financing, disputes, international sales, payouts and enabled features. A lower domestic card rate alone does not establish lower total cost.
| Option | Pricing to compare | When it deserves a closer look |
|---|---|---|
| Commas | Custom pricing based on enabled features. Commas told us they will match or beat your current rate. | Courses, coaching, paid communities and digital services needing checkout, funnels and delivery tools in one account. |
| Whop | 2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card transaction, with no monthly fee. Add applicable services and payout charges. | Lower-ticket digital products and paid communities seeking marketplace reach. |
| Stripe | 2.9% + $0.30 per successful domestic card charge, with no monthly fee. Add applicable extras. | An existing setup whose measured all-in cost remains competitive after reviewing alternatives. |
For creators, coaches and high-ticket digital sellers, Commas is our primary alternative to evaluate. It combines checkout, an AI funnel builder, courses, communities, webinars and affiliates in one account. Its payment routing can retry a declined payment with another processor, while its financing suite supports one-time purchases rather than subscriptions.
Commas does not publish pricing, and every processor’s terms allow holds.
Before switching, remove unused add-ons, review paid payout choices and include migration work in your decision. Compare financing separately: a higher fee may be worthwhile if it produces more completed sales, but that outcome is not assured.
Request a Commas quote using your current statement. If your business centers on lower-ticket products or communities, review Whop as another relevant option.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the true cost of Stripe for digital products?
Stripe’s US domestic card rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge. International cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds 1% when applicable. Disputes, instant payouts and other services can raise your total. Calculate your own effective fee rate from actual statements rather than using an assumed digital-products average.
Do all payment processors have hidden fees?
No. Many charges described as hidden are disclosed outside the headline card rate. Check the full pricing documentation and your agreement for dispute fees, currency charges, payout costs, optional services and contract charges.
How much can I save by switching payment processors?
There is no reliable universal savings figure. Ask each provider to price your actual transaction mix and enabled services, then compare that estimate with your current fees. Include migration costs and any tools the new platform would replace.
Should reserves count toward my effective processing rate?
No. A reserve or temporary hold is not automatically a fee. Track withheld money separately because it affects available cash, while actual processing charges belong in your effective fee calculation.
