Our Verdict

ThriveCart is a strong checkout and revenue platform for creators selling courses, coaching, memberships and digital products. It is not a payment processor or merchant of record; it connects the sales experience to providers such as Stripe or PayPal. Judge it on conversion tooling, subscription handling, affiliate management and course delivery, then price your stack as ThriveCart plus whatever your processor charges. If you need merchant of record coverage for tax filing and remittance, ThriveCart does not provide it.

What ThriveCart actually is

ThriveCart is a checkout and revenue platform, not a payment processor. Its help documentation states plainly: "ThriveCart is not a marketplace, not the merchant of record, and not a payment processor. At no point does ThriveCart hold commissions or money in our systems."

That distinction decides how you should evaluate it. The payment itself runs through a provider you connect, such as Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net. That provider sets your rate, settles your funds, decides any reserve or hold, and owns the dispute process. ThriveCart controls what happens around the payment: the checkout page, the funnel, the subscription rules, the affiliate program, the reporting and the course or community delivery.

Checkout and conversion tools

ThriveCart's features page lists embedded and hosted checkouts in modal, single-page, multi-step and embedded formats, multi-currency checkouts, and six payment methods including buy now pay later, one-time payment, ongoing subscriptions, time-limited subscriptions, split-pay and pay-as-you-like.

On the conversion side it lists 1-click upsells and downsells, order bumps, funnel sequencing, A/B testing, cart abandonment recovery, coupons and post-purchase offers. ThriveCart attaches uplift percentages to several of these. Those are ThriveCart's own marketing figures from its aggregate seller data, not results we measured, so treat them as claims to test against your own checkout rather than as a forecast.

Processor integrations and ThrivePay

ThriveCart advertises 100+ global payment options across Stripe, PayPal and ThrivePay Installments, and its affiliate documentation also names Authorize.net as a processor buyers can pay through.

ThrivePay Installments is described by ThriveCart as covering transactions up to $65,000, paid to the seller upfront, with the customer paying over 3, 6 or 12 months, interest-free, with no loans and no credit checks. That is ThriveCart's description of the program. Approval terms and availability are set by ThriveCart and its funding arrangements, not by us, so confirm the current terms before building an offer around it.

Tax calculation is not tax filing

ThriveCart's features page lists Global Tax Automation to calculate and collect VAT, GST and sales taxes worldwide as a Pro+ feature, and the Pro+ page lists tax calculation and tax collection separately.

Read that carefully. Calculating and collecting tax at checkout is not the same as filing and remitting it to a tax authority, and it is not merchant of record coverage. ThriveCart states it is not the merchant of record, which means the tax registration, filing and remittance obligations stay with you or your accountant. If you want a platform that takes on the merchant of record role for tax, that is a different product category, closer to Paddle or Lemon Squeezy.

Subscriptions, affiliates and reporting

Subscription lifecycle management, upgrade and downgrade flows with prorated payments, subscription reminders and failed payment recovery through email dunning are listed as Pro+ features. Cancellation retention offers and the customer self-service hub are listed on both Standard and Pro+.

Affiliate management is a Pro+ capability: an affiliate center with automated payouts, joint venture contracts, revenue splits, partner tracking, gamified commission tiers and affiliate analytics. ThriveCart says its affiliate platform powers over 900,000 affiliates.

One operational detail worth knowing before you plan payouts: ThriveCart's help documentation states that affiliate commissions cannot be paid out through Stripe or Authorize.net. Vendors pay affiliates through the integrated PayPal method or mark payments as manual and settle them outside the platform.

Reporting on Pro+ covers funnel analytics, UTM conversion tracking, subscription analytics, cohort reporting and business intelligence reporting across payment providers. Standard carries revenue dashboards, churn and retention insights and lifetime value analysis.

Courses and communities through ThriveCart Academy

Each ThriveCart plan includes a ThriveCart Academy plan. The Starter plan lists unlimited courses and students, up to 2,000 community members, up to 10 communities, 100 GB of video storage, a 2 GB maximum file size per video and 1080p streaming. Growth raises that to 10,000 community members, unlimited communities, a custom community domain, 500 GB of storage and a 4 GB file size. Scale lists unlimited members and storage, white-label branding, a 10 GB file size and 4K streaming.

ThriveCart's Academy documentation describes Communities as its native learning platform, where students land in a branded community feed and every ThriveCart purchase enrolls them automatically after the initial connection.

What ThriveCart costs you in total

ThriveCart advertises 0% fees on sales. Read that as 0% platform transaction fees, not 0% payment processing fees. Your connected processor still charges its normal rate on every transaction. If you run Stripe, that is Stripe's published 2.9% + $0.30 on domestic US cards, plus Stripe's international and conversion fees where they apply.

So your real stack cost is the ThriveCart plan fee plus your processor's per-transaction fees plus any Pro+ features you need. ThriveCart's plan cards advertise a 30-day free trial, and ThriveCart also advertises a lifetime option. How we scored it

We have not run test transactions through ThriveCart. Every figure and capability above comes from ThriveCart's own features page, Pro+ page, Academy page and help documentation, read line by line and dated. Where ThriveCart publishes a marketing claim rather than a verifiable figure, we say so and attribute it.

ThriveCart scores well on checkout conversion tooling, funnels, affiliate management, course delivery and reporting breadth. It scores neutrally on processor integrations, since the meaningful terms belong to the processor you connect. It does not score at all on the criteria our Freeze-Risk Framework applies to processors, because reserves, holds, settlement timing and merchant of record coverage are decided by Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net, not by ThriveCart.
