Dodo Payments Review 2026

Category: Merchant of record for software

By , Founder & Lead Reviewer · Scored with The Freeze-Risk Framework · Verified October 2026

Best for: SaaS, AI tools, apps, templates and other digital products sold worldwide, where you want sales tax and VAT handled.

Our Verdict

Dodo Payments fits software makers and digital-product sellers, including founders outside the US, who want a merchant of record with a lower published base rate than Paddle or Lemon Squeezy (both 5% + $0.50). Watch the surcharges: when both the international and subscription surcharges apply, a payment costs 6% + $0.40. Payouts come twice a month, disputes cost $30 even when you win, and Dodo's own merchant-of-record page puts chargeback liability on the seller. Coaches, course sellers, agencies and high-risk businesses should look elsewhere.

  • Payouts twice a month by default, $100 minimum, $5 fee on payouts under $1,000

  • Can hold a reserve sized to your risk profile; the size is not published
  • Turns away coaching, consulting, agency and freelance services, adult content, dating, supplements, physical goods, video games, online games and in-game currencies
  • Mixed Trustpilot reviews (3.1 out of 5 from 136 reviews on October 6, 2026), with complaints about closed accounts and held funds

What Dodo Payments charges

Dodo's base rate is 4% + $0.40 per domestic US card or wallet payment, with no monthly fee. Surcharges stack on top: +1.5% on international payments, +0.5% on subscriptions and usage-based billing, and +3% for Klarna or Afterpay. When both the international and subscription surcharges apply, a payment costs 6% + $0.40.

ACH (US) and SEPA (EU) bank debits cost 1.5%, capped at $15 / €15, instead of the card fee. Each refund costs $1 and the original fee is not returned. Each dispute costs $30, and Dodo keeps it even if you win.

Dodo's merchant agreement (last updated February 26, 2026) lists different base fees than its pricing page. Confirm the rate in your own agreement before you sign.

How payouts work

Payouts run twice a month by default: sales from the 1st to the 15th pay out on the 18th, and sales from the 16th to month end pay out on the 4th. The default minimum is $100, and you can lower it to $50. Weekly payouts are available on request for higher volumes, and Dodo says some high-risk businesses may be moved to a monthly cycle.

Before your first payout, Dodo runs a monitoring review after verification. Dodo can also hold back a reserve sized to your risk profile, and it does not publish the size.

What Dodo will and will not accept

Dodo accepts SaaS and AI products, digital goods, templates, plugins and apps. E-books and productised services are reviewed case by case.

It does not accept adult or NSFW content (including OnlyFans-style platforms), manual services like coaching, consulting, freelancing or custom design and development, physical goods, supplements and health products, dating and matchmaking, travel, gambling, crypto, financial products including wealth-building courses, or licensed professional services. Gaming and virtual-goods environments are also off the list: games of skill, online games, video games, in-game currencies and digital item sales. Dodo's policy says breaches can lead to withheld payouts.

Which countries can use Dodo

Eligibility follows the country that issued your government ID (and the ID of every director and owner), not where your company is registered. Dodo lists 177 countries. Countries not listed include Pakistan, Kenya, Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Nigeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco and Ukraine are only open to merchants already active before March 23, 2026. Checked October 6, 2026.

Getting approved

Dodo checks your ID with a selfie, verifies your company if you sell through one, and verifies your bank account. Your live site must show pricing, terms, privacy policy, refund policy and contact details that match your application. Dodo says most reviews finish within 1 to 3 business days. You get one appeal only.

Who should use something else

Coaches, course sellers and agencies should look at Commas. Paid communities fit Whop better. High-risk businesses should compare Easy Pay Direct and Durango Merchant Services.
