Our Verdict (Winner: Neither; they occupy different layers of the same stack)
This is a complementary stack, not an either/or contest. Run Stripe alone if you have developers and want to build your own checkout against Stripe's API. Add ThriveCart when you want order bumps, 1-click upsells, funnels, subscription tooling, affiliate management and course delivery without building them, and you are happy to pay a platform fee on top of Stripe's per-transaction fees. What ThriveCart cannot do is change your rate, your settlement timing, your reserve or your merchant of record position, because those all belong to Stripe.
ThriveCart is best for: Creators and coaches who want a high-converting checkout, funnels, subscriptions, affiliates and course delivery without building them.
Stripe is best for: Processing the payment itself, and developer-led teams building custom checkout against an API.

They are not competing for the same job
ThriveCart's help documentation states that ThriveCart is not a marketplace, not the merchant of record, and not a payment processor, and that it never holds money in its systems. Stripe is the processor. That single fact settles most of this comparison.
When a buyer pays on a ThriveCart checkout with Stripe connected, Stripe charges its fee, holds the money until payout, decides any reserve, and handles the dispute if one arrives. ThriveCart decided what the buyer saw, what was offered after the purchase, how the subscription behaves, which affiliate gets credit and where the course lands.
What Stripe charges, and what ThriveCart adds
Stripe publishes 2.9% + $0.30 per successful domestic US card charge, with no monthly fee. International cards add 1.5% and currency conversion adds 1%.
ThriveCart advertises 0% fees on sales. That means 0% platform transaction fees. It does not reduce Stripe's rate by a cent. Your total cost is Stripe's per-transaction fees plus whatever ThriveCart plan you sit on, so the honest question is whether ThriveCart's conversion tooling earns back its plan fee.
Where each one genuinely wins
Stripe wins on everything that belongs to the processor: pricing transparency, settlement, API depth, documentation and the breadth of payment methods it can present.
ThriveCart wins on everything that belongs to the seller's front end: order bumps, 1-click upsells and downsells, funnel sequencing, A/B testing, cart abandonment recovery, subscription upgrade and downgrade flows with prorating, dunning on failed payments, affiliate management with automated payouts, and course and community delivery through ThriveCart Academy. Most of the advanced items sit on the Pro+ plan rather than Standard.
Building that list yourself on raw Stripe is a real engineering project. Paying for it is the trade.
Tax: read the wording carefully on both sides
ThriveCart lists global tax automation to calculate and collect VAT, GST and sales taxes as a Pro+ feature. Stripe sells Stripe Tax as a paid product that calculates tax and, in supported jurisdictions, files returns.
Neither makes anyone the merchant of record for your sales. Calculating and collecting tax at checkout is not the same as being legally responsible for registering, filing and remitting it. If you want that responsibility moved off your business, you are looking for a merchant of record platform, which is a different product category again.
When you would pick just one
Use Stripe alone when you have developers, your checkout is simple, and you would rather own the whole flow in code.
Use ThriveCart on top of Stripe when your revenue depends on the offer structure rather than the integration: high-converting checkouts, post-purchase offers, affiliate-driven launches and course delivery. You still need a processor either way, so ThriveCart is never the one you drop Stripe for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use ThriveCart with Stripe?
Yes. Stripe is one of the payment providers ThriveCart connects to, alongside PayPal and Authorize.net. Stripe processes the payment and charges its own fees, while ThriveCart provides the checkout, funnel, subscription and delivery layer. This is the normal setup rather than an edge case.
Is ThriveCart a replacement for Stripe?
No. ThriveCart states it is not a payment processor, so it cannot take a card payment on its own. You still need Stripe, PayPal or Authorize.net connected behind it.
Is ThriveCart cheaper than Stripe?
The question does not apply. ThriveCart advertises 0% platform transaction fees and charges a plan fee. Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 on domestic US cards to process the payment. Running both costs Stripe's fees plus ThriveCart's plan fee.
Who holds my money, ThriveCart or Stripe?
Stripe. ThriveCart's documentation states it never holds money in its systems. Settlement timing, payouts and any reserve are decided by the processor you connect.
Which one handles my sales tax filing?
Neither by default. ThriveCart offers tax calculation and collection on Pro+. Stripe sells Stripe Tax, which calculates tax and can file in supported jurisdictions. Neither is your merchant of record, so registration and liability stay with your business.
Do I need ThriveCart if I already use Stripe Checkout?
Only if you want what Stripe Checkout does not do: order bumps, 1-click upsells and downsells, funnel sequencing, affiliate management and course delivery. If a simple hosted payment page covers your offer, Stripe alone is enough.
