Selling $5 Products? Compare Merchant of Record Fees for Micro-Transactions
Small sales need careful fee comparisons. Check the fixed charge, tax service and category approval before choosing a provider.
From our coverage of Creator and digital product payments. Checkout for courses, communities, coaching and digital products.
The cheapest merchant of record for micro-transactions is not necessarily the provider with the lowest advertised card rate. Fixed charges, tax services, payout fees and optional tools can change what you keep from each small sale.
This matters when selling a $5 download, software purchase or community membership. A fixed transaction charge takes a larger share of a small purchase than a large one.
Category approval comes first. OnlyFans management agencies and individual adult creators need different payment arrangements. Do not assume a provider listed for software or digital goods also accepts adult entertainment.
Is Whop the lowest-cost choice for small digital sales?
Whop is a strong starting point for lower-ticket digital products and paid communities. It is also an option for OnlyFans management agencies, not individual adult creators. Its domestic card rate is lower than the published checkout rates of Paddle and Lemon Squeezy, but the services included are not identical.
| Whop charge | Published fee |
|---|---|
| Domestic card processing | 2.7% + $0.30 |
| International cards | Additional 1.5% |
| Currency conversion | Additional 1% |
| Tax and remittance | 2% when tax is collected |
| Optional billing | 0.5% |
| Instant bank deposit | 4% + $1.00 |
| Monthly fee | None |
Whop is merchant of record for card network rules and payment settlement. It is merchant of record for tax only when “Whop Collects and Remits” is enabled. Standard payouts can take up to 5 business days; instant deposits cost extra.
Explore Whop if its supported business model matches yours. Software sellers can also use our SaaS payment processor guide to compare their needs.
How do Lemon Squeezy and Paddle compare for micro-transactions?
Lemon Squeezy and Paddle publish the same base transaction rate. Their fixed charge deserves close attention when purchases are small, but price alone does not establish which service fits your business.
| Provider | Published transaction fee | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + $0.50 | Merchant of record; some international payments add small fees. No monthly fee. |
| Paddle | 5% + $0.50 | Merchant of record handling global sales tax/VAT, fraud and chargebacks. No monthly or migration fees. |
Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024. As of 2026, it still operates as its own merchant of record, while Stripe offers users a path to migrate to Stripe Managed Payments.
For software tax requirements, read our Paddle vs. Stripe international tax comparison. Course sellers should also check our online course payment guide. Neither comparison should be treated as approval for adult entertainment.
Does Gumroad avoid a fixed fee on small purchases?
No. Gumroad charges a fixed fee on direct sales as well as a percentage. The original idea that its direct-sale pricing is percentage-only would lead to the wrong micro-transaction comparison.
| Sales channel | Gumroad fee |
|---|---|
| Direct sale | 10% + $0.50 |
| Gumroad Discover sale | 30% |
| Monthly fee | None |
Separate direct sales from marketplace sales when estimating costs. Discover's fee should not be used as the rate for traffic you bring yourself, and the direct-sale rate should not be used for Discover purchases.
Our Whop vs. Gumroad comparison covers the broader decision. Do not infer adult-category acceptance from a platform's support for digital products.
Should developers consider Dodo Payments for micro-transactions?
Dodo Payments belongs on a research shortlist, not in a verified cheapest-provider ranking here. Check its current pricing page and service terms before comparing it with the published rates above.
| What to verify | What to request |
|---|---|
| Transaction pricing | Current percentage and fixed charges. |
| Merchant-of-record scope | Written details of tax, refund and dispute responsibilities. |
| Product eligibility | Approval for the actual product and business model. |
| Integration requirements | Documentation for checkout, billing and product delivery. |
Do not assume that a developer-focused service is cheaper, offers negotiated micro-transaction rates or requires you to build your entire storefront. Those details need verification before they influence your choice.
Can PayPro Global offer competitive micro-transaction pricing?
PayPro Global's pricing is quote-based for this comparison. Without a written offer, there is no basis to claim it will beat a published rate or reduce its fixed fee for high-volume sellers.
| Quote detail | Why to ask |
|---|---|
| Percentage and fixed charge | Shows how the offer applies to your typical purchase. |
| Tax and cross-border costs | Clarifies what is included in the quoted service. |
| Refund and dispute costs | Reveals costs beyond successful sales. |
| Category approval | Establishes whether the provider supports your business. |
Send your expected purchase size, customer locations and sales volume when requesting terms. Ask for the full fee schedule rather than a headline rate. Our Whop vs. PayPro Global comparison provides more context for international sellers.
Is FastSpring too expensive for micro-transactions?
That cannot be established without current pricing. FastSpring's pricing is quote-based for this comparison, so unsupported historical rates should not be used to rule it out.
| Item to compare | Decision test |
|---|---|
| Fixed transaction charge | Does it leave enough margin on your smallest purchase? |
| Included services | Does the quote cover the tax and billing work you need? |
| Other charges | Are refunds, disputes, payouts or contract costs separate? |
| Business approval | Does the agreement explicitly cover what you sell? |
A provider is not automatically unsuitable because it serves larger businesses. Compare its written offer with your actual costs and purchase patterns. For adult entertainment, start with a provider that explicitly supports that category instead of assuming a software-focused checkout will accept it.
Which merchant of record should you choose for micro-transactions?
Whop is the strongest starting point here for eligible low-ticket digital products and OnlyFans management agency services. Its lower domestic card rate is useful, but tax coverage and optional services must be included in your comparison.
| Your business | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Low-ticket digital products or paid communities | Compare Whop's complete fee setup with Paddle and Lemon Squeezy's published rates. |
| OnlyFans management agency | Consider Whop for agency services, not individual creator content sales. |
| Individual adult creator or adult entertainment business | Seek a dedicated high-risk merchant account approved for adult entertainment; approach a specialist such as Easy Pay Direct about underwriting. |
| Software business considering custom terms | Compare written quotes from PayPro Global and FastSpring. |
A high-risk merchant account is not automatically a merchant-of-record service. Ask who handles tax collection and remittance. Our OnlyFans agency payment guide explains the agency-specific choice.
Commas (formerly FanBasis) told us it does not accept OnlyFans management agencies or adult entertainment.
Every processor's terms allow holds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a payment gateway and a merchant of record?
A gateway handles payment routing. A merchant of record takes on seller responsibilities defined by its service and contract. Check tax coverage explicitly: Whop is merchant of record for card network rules and settlement, but tax merchant-of-record coverage requires “Whop Collects and Remits.”
What published fees can I compare for micro-transactions?
<table><thead><tr><th>Provider</th><th>Published fee</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Whop</td><td>2.7% + $0.30 per domestic card transaction; tax and other services can cost extra.</td></tr><tr><td>Paddle</td><td>5% + $0.50 per checkout transaction.</td></tr><tr><td>Lemon Squeezy</td><td>5% + $0.50 per transaction; some international payments add fees.</td></tr></tbody></table>
Is Whop the cheapest merchant of record for small digital goods?
Whop has a lower published domestic card rate than Paddle and Lemon Squeezy, but that does not establish the lowest all-in cost. Include tax services, billing, international payments and payout charges when comparing your setup.
Are fees higher for $5 products?
A smaller purchase does not necessarily receive a higher rate. The problem is that a fixed transaction charge consumes a larger share of the sale, leaving less room for delivery, support and advertising costs.
Can individual adult creators use the same recommendation as OnlyFans management agencies?
No. Whop is an option for OnlyFans management agencies, not individual adult creators. Individual creators should seek a dedicated high-risk merchant account explicitly approved for adult entertainment and confirm whether tax services are included.
