Authorize.net vs Stripe: Should Your Established Business Switch?
Compare the full cost of switching, understand who approves your business, and protect your recurring billing during migration.
This is part of Head to head comparisons. Side by side spec tables and verdicts for the processors people shortlist.
The Authorize.net vs Stripe decision is not simply about established businesses outgrowing a starter platform. It is about your business category, total processing costs, integration needs and the terms behind your account.
For adult businesses and OnlyFans management agencies, category approval comes before price. A gateway connects payments to a processing arrangement; it does not make an otherwise prohibited business acceptable. For other established merchants, switching is worth considering only when the proposed account and operational benefits outweigh the cost of moving.
1. What is the core difference between Authorize.net and Stripe?
Authorize.net is a payment gateway; Stripe provides an integrated payments platform. With Authorize.net, you need to understand the merchant account and processing arrangement behind the gateway. With Stripe, checkout, payment management and integrations sit within the same platform.
| Question | Authorize.net | Stripe |
|---|---|---|
| What are you choosing? | A gateway and a compatible merchant account arrangement | An integrated payments platform |
| Who determines category eligibility? | The gateway and the merchant account provider must permit your activity | Stripe's applicable business restrictions and account review |
| What should an established merchant evaluate? | Account terms, gateway compatibility and the processing quote | Existing integration value, pricing and account terms |
Upfront underwriting gives a provider the opportunity to review your business. It does not establish that Authorize.net is inherently safer or that a sales spike cannot prompt another review. Every processor's terms allow holds.
For adult entertainment, obtain explicit approval for the actual products, content and payment flow. Do not assume a high-risk merchant account automatically makes Authorize.net suitable.
2. How do Stripe's published fees compare with an Authorize.net merchant account?
Stripe publishes standard US processing rates; an Authorize.net comparison requires the gateway's current pricing plus the merchant account provider's quote. An interchange-plus offer may be competitive, but it is not automatically cheaper. Compare the total cost using your actual transaction mix.
| Cost | Stripe, US | Authorize.net arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic card processing | 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge | Check current gateway pricing and the processor's quote |
| International cards | Additional 1.5% | Check the processing agreement |
| Currency conversion | Additional 1% when required | Check availability and the processing agreement |
| Monthly fees | No monthly fee for standard payments | Review gateway and merchant account charges |
| Disputes | $15 when received; responding adds $15, refunded only if you win | Check the merchant account provider's dispute fees |
| Reserve terms | Set per account; no fixed hold length published | Review the proposed account agreement |
Ask a prospective provider to explain gateway charges, processing markup, dispute costs and contract obligations together. For adult categories, request a quote based on your disclosed business rather than a general advertised rate. Our guide to payment processing fees explains how to compare the full bill.
3. What integration work would switching from Stripe to Authorize.net require?
Switching gateways is an integration project, not just a dashboard change. Your checkout, payment tokens, subscriptions, refunds and reporting may depend on Stripe-specific behavior. Scope those dependencies before signing a new processing agreement.
| Area | Staying with Stripe | Moving to Authorize.net |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout | Retain the existing implementation | Confirm plugin support or build a compatible integration |
| Saved payment details | Keep the existing vault arrangement | Confirm a supported provider-to-provider transfer |
| Recurring billing | Keep existing billing workflows | Map billing schedules and payment credentials separately |
| Operations | Keep current reconciliation processes | Test refunds, reporting and dispute workflows |
Do not assume payment tokens work across providers or that moving card data also moves subscription logic. Have the receiving provider confirm what it can accept, and use a secure provider-led transfer rather than handling raw card details yourself.
For software businesses, our guide to the best payment processors for SaaS covers the broader platform decision. For this switch, ask your developer for a written scope rather than relying on a generic migration estimate.
4. What risk and compliance checks should you make before switching?
Get your business category approved before moving transactions. Describe what you sell, who receives the service, how you bill and whether payments relate to adult content or agency services. An OnlyFans management agency collecting management fees is not the same payment model as an individual creator selling adult content.
Easy Pay Direct provides high-risk merchant accounts and supports multiple merchant accounts with failover routing. Ask whether it can place your exact category and which gateway the approved account supports. For OnlyFans management agencies, Whop is another option to evaluate, not a recommendation for individual adult creators.
Whop is merchant of record for card network rules and payment settlement. It handles tax as merchant of record only when "Whop Collects and Remits" is enabled. That distinction matters: merchant of record status does not mean every tax or compliance responsibility disappears. Read our Whop vs Stripe comparison for the platform trade-offs.
Commas (formerly FanBasis) told us they do not accept OnlyFans management agencies or adult entertainment.
Before migration, document how pending disputes, refunds and old subscriptions will be handled. If funds are already restricted, our frozen payment processor account guide explains what to review; changing gateways does not release an existing hold.
5. When should you stay with Stripe, move to Authorize.net or choose a specialist?
Stay when your current eligible setup works; switch when a documented offer solves a specific problem. Revenue growth alone does not make Authorize.net cheaper or more appropriate. For adult businesses, the decisive factor is a processing arrangement that explicitly permits the category.
| Your situation | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Eligible mainstream business with reliable existing billing | Keep Stripe unless a full cost and integration review supports switching |
| Business with a competitive merchant account offer | Evaluate Authorize.net if the account supports it and permits your activity |
| Adult entertainment business or individual adult creator | Seek a category-approved high-risk merchant account through a specialist such as Easy Pay Direct |
| OnlyFans management agency | Compare Whop with a dedicated merchant account approved for agency services |
Agencies can start with our OnlyFans management agency payment processing guide or explore Whop for agency payments. Businesses selling a separate, non-adult coaching offer can use our high-ticket coaching payment guide.
Make the final decision using written category approval, a complete fee quote and a tested migration plan, not a promise that one gateway removes processing risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my existing merchant account with Authorize.net?
You may be able to use a compatible existing merchant account. Ask your provider to confirm gateway support and category approval. Having a business bank account alone is not the same as having a compatible merchant account.
Is Authorize.net better than Stripe for established businesses?
Not automatically. Authorize.net may fit a business with a suitable merchant account and a competitive complete quote. Stripe may be the better choice when an eligible business already relies on its checkout and billing integrations. Volume alone does not determine the winner.
Can I migrate Stripe customers to Authorize.net?
Ask both providers to confirm a supported payment-data migration before committing. Saved card credentials, customer records and subscription schedules are separate migration tasks. Do not assume existing tokens can simply be copied into the new gateway.
Will switching break my existing website?
It can disrupt checkout or recurring billing if compatibility is not tested. Confirm support for your website platform, map payment events and test purchases, refunds and renewals before directing live traffic to the new setup.
Is Authorize.net an automatic solution for adult businesses?
No. A gateway does not override category restrictions. Adult businesses need explicit approval from the relevant gateway and merchant account provider. Evaluate a dedicated high-risk account rather than assuming an Authorize.net integration makes the business acceptable.
